Mortality Date Estimation Using Fetal Pronghorn Remains
نویسندگان
چکیده
Pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) fetal remains are sometimes recovered from archaeological contexts. Pronghorn have consistent reproductive schedules so their remains may provide information on seasonality of site occupation and number of mortality events. To investigate the reliability of fetal remains for seasonality and mortality event assessment, bone size and tooth eruption were measured in a sample of modern fetal pronghorn remains with known mortality dates. Results indicate a strong correlation between bone size and mortality date, but no significant correlation between tooth eruption level and mortality date. Fetal bone size was used to estimate a late April or early May mortality date at both the Oyster Ridge (48UT35) and Trappers Point (48SU1006) archaeological sites. The number of mortality events at Trappers Point was also investigated. Copyright 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Sonographic estimation of fetal weight in term pregnant women
Introduction: Deviation from normal fetal weight and growth contribute to morbidity and mortality in the perinatal period. Over 50 formulas for EFW (estimated fetal weight) have been published and yet the ideal formula has not been determined. The objective of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of sonographic estimation of fetal weight using Hadlock formula in comparison to birth weight....
متن کاملInfluence of Habitat and Intrinsic Characteristics on Survival of Neonatal Pronghorn
Increased understanding of the influence of habitat (e.g., composition, patch size) and intrinsic (e.g., age, birth mass) factors on survival of neonatal pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) is a prerequisite to successful management programs, particularly as they relate to population dynamics and the role of population models in adaptive species management. Nevertheless, few studies have presente...

Objective To estimate the days in which the likelihood of conception happened by using first trimester ultrasound fetal biometry in natural cycles and spontaneous pregnancy, and to explore some factors that may affect them. MaterialsAndMethods This study is retrospective cohort study, with random sampling. It involved 60 pregnant ladies at first trimester; the date of conception was estimated u...
متن کاملEvaluating Ungulate Mortality Associated With Helicopter Net-Gun Captures in the Northern Great Plains
Ungulate mortality from capture-related injuries is a recurring concern for researchers and game managers throughout North America and elsewhere. We evaluated effects of 7 variables to determine whether ungulate mortality could be reduced by modifying capture and handling procedures during helicopter net-gunning. During winter 2001–2006, we captured 208 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus...
